7/29/2019 Avg Not Updating Virus Definitions
What virus definitions are installed in Windows Defender (WD)?
When did WD last install updates?https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/definitions
Remember WD normally will autoupdate appx every 24 hrs as needed.
Any other security program installed?
On Windows 8/8.1 when a third party antimalware program (such as AVG, McAfee, Norton, Trend, etc) is installed the Windows Defender (WD) program is disabled.
If you wish to use WD on W8.1 you must uninstall any third party antimalware program that may be on the computer, run the appropriate software removal tool and reboot the computer. See List of anti-malware product removal tools
WD should then be enabled though you might need to restart WD in Security Services.

I have a message, 'Not Protected' and when I click on it, there's another message that says 'Virus Definitions Are Out of Date.' When I click the 'Update Now' button, it starts the download but quickly stops and shows another message saying the definitions are up to date. Am I up to date .. or not? And if not, what do I need to do to actually complete the update?
Hello, Tracy.
Thank you for reaching us with your concerns. Please accept my apologies with regards to the update issue that you are experiencing. This issue could be caused due to incomplete installation of new update files. I would request you to uninstall AVG Internet Security from your PC and re install it. Click on this link http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG for steps to uninstall AVG. Then refer to steps in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Download-and-install-AVG-Ultimate on how to reinstall AVG Internet Security.
I am having a similar problem.. however, after receiving the same messages as Tracy, I tried resetting AVG to factory settings, then 'repairing' AVG. This seemed to work for several hours, but when I switched on the next day, I started getting messages about the virus definitions being out of date. Now when I try to update, it quickly aborts the attempt, with an 'unknown error' message. I tried following the suggestions in your message Avinash, but I couldn't uninstall AVG. Trying to uninstall it normally, it seemed to try to uninstall AVG free (I have AVG Internet Security - paid for) and failed. Then I downloaded and used the AVG remover tool - but the only program it gave me the option of removing was PC TuneUp.
Any suggestions? Any suggestions

Hi,
I've noticed my virus definitions haven't been automatically updated for the past five days now. The program doesn't want to update manually either. The window displays 'Last encountered error: Setup is already running.'
Can anyone help please?
